When I was starting out in my career, I thought mentorship was for “senior” people.

I told myself:
“I need 10 years of experience before I can teach anyone.”

But one day, a friend asked me to explain Git basics.
I walked her through commits, branching, and merging.

In that moment, I realized something:
Explaining concepts out loud exposed gaps in my own understanding.

Mentorship wasn’t just helping her.
It was sharpening me.

Why Mentorship Accelerates Growth

Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • When you teach, you clarify your own thinking.

  • When you guide others, you spot mistakes faster in your own work.

  • When you mentor, you grow influence beyond just code.

Mentorship makes you indispensable because you stop being “just another engineer” and start being a force multiplier for your team.

The Problem Without Mentorship

Many engineers stay stuck because they only focus on their own tasks.
They don’t share knowledge.
They don’t invest in others.

And the result?
They get replaced by the next coder who can deliver features.

But engineers who mentor?
They create leverage.
When they step into the room, the entire team levels up.

How to Practice Mentorship (Even If You’re New)

  1. Teach what you know — even if it’s just how to write a simple script.

  2. Document your process — share notes, explain decisions.

  3. Review code with patience — don’t just find errors, explain why.

  4. Encourage questions — it builds trust and confidence.

You don’t need to be an expert.
You just need to be one step ahead of someone else.

A Story That Proved This

One of my mentees recently built 70 landing pages before moving on to JavaScript.
At first, she thought the assignment was “slowing her down.”

But today, she’s the go-to person at her company for frontend design.

Why?
Because teaching her the fundamentals deeply → gave her mastery.
And now, she’s mentoring others on her team.

Her growth skyrocketed because she taught and reinforced what she learned.

This Week’s Challenge

Find one person you can teach this week.
It could be a colleague, a junior, or even a friend.

Explain a concept you know.
Notice how it strengthens your own understanding..

Final Thoughts

Mentorship isn’t a “later” skill.
It’s a “right now” skill.

Code makes you valuable.
But mentoring others makes you indispensable.
